Del Woodward’s home just north of downtown used to mark the edge of Ames, beyond which lay miles of cornfields before the next town. That was back in the 1940s, when he built his home for his family of five. Now, he sits with his son Dale in the same home 80 years later to reflect on life in Ames, marked by giving and receiving the care of the community.
A World War Two Veteran and lifelong Iowan, Del knows what it means to work hard and serve others. Following a 46-year retail career on Main Street, Del and his wife volunteered for nearly three decades at Heartland of Story County, sharing hospitality and conversation at the noon meal. “I set up the tables and chairs. At that time, we only had one room, so we had to change it for meals or card games.” Now, Heartland is thriving in their beautiful new space at the Sixty Forward Center while reaching out to those who cannot come in person.
Through a strong partnership with Mary Greely Medical Center, the generosity of the community, and a growing troop of over 80 volunteers, Heartland’s outreach team brings daily meals to people around Story County who are unable to leave their homes. Del receives each meal with gratitude, recognizing the vital role it plays in allowing him to stay in his own home well into his 100s. “It’s a good variety, it’s food I enjoy, and it helps a lot."
Even though Del isn’t out and about as much as he used to be, he understands the value of community and always appreciates visitors. By continuing to live in his home, Del remains a pillar of his community, always ready to share stories and wisdom with neighbors. “If somebody’s got a question, he can usually come up with the answer,” Dale affirms.
For Meals on Wheels volunteers and recipients, it’s more than dropping off or receiving a meal each day; it’s an opportunity to strengthen relationships. Del looks forward to seeing each weekly volunteer. “Today Marilyn will be here. Yesterday, Ted. Wednesday, Deb. Thursday, Marilyn. Friday, Ted.” Through these consistent visits, Del maintains strong connections in the community and knows that people will always be checking in. “It’s nice to see them!”
